Kabalagala Community Academy

The Kabalagala Community Academy is a not-for-profit primary school dedicated to serving children in need in Uganda.

KCA was started to fulfill a collective creative vision: to create a self-sustaining school of the highest educational quality that serves as a platform for learning, nurturing, creating, and healing. Small class sizes, child-centered learning, and a focus on emotional development set KCA apart from many other schools in Uganda. Great care is paid to ensure basic needs are met so that students can reach their potential. The inclusion of a well-balanced diet, access to medical services and health education, and an oral hygiene program ensure that KCA is a school that nourishes both the mind and the body.

The students at KCA have discovered that the school is an environment in which they are provided with the opportunity to explore their world and the worlds of others. The pain of hunger is overcome—leaving the children free to think, play, and explore the world around them. In addition to school subjects, children participate in activities including drama, circle time, mental math games, news sharing, story time, and one-on-one tutoring by volunteers.

Among the principles governing the Kabalagala Community Academy is conservancy. Our staff leads activities that conserve our resources, reduce our costs, and respect our environment. For instance, KCA created a compost heap so that all biodegradable foodstuffs could be broken down and reused as fertilizer, which is then used in agriculture lessons; paper items are saved and cut up for use in collage and other art projects.
